AICM reinforces epidemiological surveillance against the Omicron variant of Covid-19: Sheinbaum

Mexico City International Airport (AICM) has strengthened epidemiological surveillance to detect possible cases of the variant Covid-19 omicron, reported the Head of Government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum.

“We are responsible for epidemiological surveillance at the Airport. A reinforcement is being made by the Ministry of Health, but above all coordination with the Ministry of Health of the Government of Mexico, they are the ones who do the analysis,” he explained. the official during a conference on the installation of the Security Cabinet in the Cuajimalpa mayor’s office.

The official explained that so far in the capital of the country there have been no cases of this coronavirus variant originally detected in South Africa.

He explained that the capital authorities have an agreement with the National Institute of Genomic Medicine to track and, where appropriate, detect cases of this variant.

“For now it is nothing more than to follow up and not have great alarm, until we know exactly what the conditions of this variant are and we will be attentive as always,” said Sheinbaum Pardo.

The new variant of the coronavirus, Omicron, continues to spread around the world after 13 cases detected in the Netherlands, and led Israel to close its borders to foreign citizens.

With more than five million deaths worldwide since the Covid-19 pandemic was declared, the World Health Organization (WHO) considered the new variant Omicron, detected this week, as “worrisome”.

According to the first “image” of the new strain, made and published by the Bambinio Gesù hospital in Rome, Ómicron has many more mutations than the delta variant, although that “does not automatically mean that these variations are more dangerous,” the researchers said.

Identified in South Africa on Thursday, November 25, many countries reacted by closing their borders with southern African nations.

This Sunday, the WHO He reiterated his call for “the borders to remain open” and affirmed to be “on the side of the African countries” in a statement.

“We are in a race against the clock” to stop the new variant, admitted this Sunday the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

It should be remembered that on Saturday night, the Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, reiterated that travel restrictions or border closures “are not very useful measures” and highlighted the economic and social effects they cause.
