Agustín Rodríguez Fuentes, STUNAM union leader, died at the age of 71


Agustin Rodriguez Fuentesgeneral secretary of the Workers’ Union of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (STUNAM) died this Monday, February 21 at the age of 71, due to complications from Covid-19.

The trade union organization reported his death and lamented the loss of the person who also held the collegiate presidency of the National Union of Workers (UNT).

Rodríguez Fuentes was a union leader of the STUNAM since 1994 and had held that same portfolio for 28 years, being one of the first unions to promote the free and secret ballot.

According to the union statutes, in its article 26 it establishes that if the Executive committee already has at least half of his term at the head of the portfolio he represents, he will be the General Council of Representatives the one in charge of appointing a provisional substitute.

Who was Agustín Rodríguez Fuentes?

The union leader was born in Oaxaca in August 1950 and for more than four decades held various positions in the representative structure of university workers. An electrical engineer graduated from the Higher School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering of the National Polytechnic Institute, Rodríguez Fuentes was also a federal deputy for the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD).

He began his union career as a delegate at the UNAM School of Dentistry in the 1970s. STUNAM. Between 1977 and 1980 he was a member of the autonomous commission of the union organization and from 1980 to 1985 analysis secretary.
