Afghanistan: two Taliban, one civilian killed in new attack in Jalalabad

Kabul | Two Taliban and a civilian were killed on Wednesday in an attack on a checkpoint by forces of the new Taliban regime in Jalalabad, in eastern Afghanistan, according to a security source and witnesses on the spot.

Unidentified gunmen attacked a checkpoint in Ghawchak district and killed two Taliban and a passer-by, the sources said.

A Taliban official confirmed the attack, adding that the victims were all civilians.

In a separate incident, residents told AFP that two Taliban fighters were injured while trying to defuse an improvised explosive device in Jalalabad.

No further details were immediately available.

The city of Jalalabad, capital of Nangarhar, was rocked last weekend by a series of attacks claimed by the local branch of the Islamic State (IS-K).

Saturday’s three explosions – the first deadly attacks in Afghanistan since the last US troops left on August 30 – killed at least two people and injured around 20 others, according to a Taliban official.

Nangarhar is the main focus of the group of IS-K, rival of the Taliban, which has claimed responsibility for a series of deadly attacks in recent years, including the bloody bombing that killed more than 100 people at Kabul airport on August 26th.
