“I will work tirelessly for the welfare of all residents of the Sangrur constituency,” said newly elected MP Simranjit Mann, 77, who won from the same seat in 1999. The election was necessary as former Sangrur MP Bhagwant Mann resigned after becoming the CM.
Simranjit got 2,53,154 votes while Gurmail Singh got 2,47,332 votes, according to results declared on Sunday. Congressional candidate Dalvir Singh Goldy, BJP’s Kewal Dhillon and SAD’s Kamaldeep Kaur Rajoana were ranked third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Goldy got 79,668 votes, Dhillon 66,298 and Kamaldeep 44,428.
Despite intense campaigning by all the top AAP leaders, including CM Mann, National Coordinator Arvind Kejriwal, ministers and MLAs, the party failed to win high risk battle. Mistrust over the fulfillment of major poll promises appears to have cost the AAP dearly. During the CM Mann roadshow in the middle of the campaign, many residents had filed their protest. Voters apparently considered Simranjit a good alternative even in the early days of the campaign. He got a good response from young people when he raised the issue of the murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala, as well as the “failures” of the state government.
The SAD, which was listed last, focused mainly on the release of Sikh prisoners during the campaign, the BJP gave Kewal Dhillon a party ticket, who joined the party just a day before the nomination announcement, while that Congress did not offer any concrete agenda. Dhillon said that he accepted the verdict. “The result shows that the neighbors have rejected the policies of the AAP government. Despite having the CM, two ministers and 6 other MLAs from the parliamentary constituency, the party has failed to retain the seat. The CM, for his part, tweeted: “I accept the verdict of the people. I am working honestly and diligently for the progress of Punjab and will continue to do so. I am your son and I would leave no stone unturned for a better future for your families.”
