A Spaniard displaced to Ukraine to fight in the war died in the early hours of Friday to Saturday. The young man, 22 years old and originally from the Manacor area, in Mallorca, had enlisted to fight against the Russian army, it has not transpired whether as a volunteer or as a mercenary. He is the first victim in Mallorca of an armed conflict which has lasted for almost four months.

The deceased had moved to Ukraine from the Netherlands. Sources from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated yesterday that they are in contact with the family to give them all the information they have about the circumstances that led to this tragedy. They are also in talks with the Ukrainian authorities in the area of the incident with the aim of repatriating the body to Mallorca as quickly as possible.

The death occurred in the early hours of Friday to Saturday in an area of Ukraine that has not transpired. Details of how the young man’s death occurred are not known either. A significant number of Spaniards have traveled to the country in conflict to help the Ukrainian army, although it is unknown if this young Majorcan had any kind of military training or previous combat experience.

There are dozens of Majorcans who have traveled to Ukraine to carry out voluntary actions since the beginning of the Russian invasion, mainly enrolled in social entities such as Per Ells to deliver humanitarian material to the Ukrainian border and bring refugees back to the islandsmainly children and women, to take them in while the conflict drags on.

However, in the vast majority of cases they have not crossed the borders of the country, and even less so to take up arms, which makes the case of the deceased Majorcan combatant an exceptional case.
