Glen de Vries, a businessman who went into space last month on a trip with Blue Origin, Jeff Bezos’ company, died this Friday in a plane crash in New Jersey.
De Vries, co-founder of Medidata Solutions, had shared a ride on the ‘Blue Shepard’ rocket with actor William Shatner, who played the famous Captain Kirk on Star Trek for four decades and became the oldest person in travel to space, at 90 years old.
De Vries’ journey lasted 11 minutes and was also with Chris Boshuizen (ex-NASA engineer and co-founder of Planet Labs) and Audrey Powers (manager of Blue Origin). It was the second passenger flight aboard Bezos’s company.
Along with Glen de Vries, the other passenger on the plane, Thomas P. Fisher, has died. The US federal aviation regulator, the FAA; will investigate the causes of the loss.
