A Senate full of translators

The PSOE yesterday supported a proposal by the Junts per Catalunya in the Senate to reform the regulations of the Chamber and allow Catalan, like other languages of the country, to be used “in plenary sessions, in commissions and in all parliamentary activity” .

Thus, when a senator from Lleida or Gipuzkoa addresses his fellow Andalusians, Extremadura or Galicians, he may do so not in the language that is common to them, but in the co-official language of his region.

Nonsense is a useless gesture that does not satisfy or temper nationalist aspirations in any way, and it will only serve to create more spending and bureaucracy, filling the Senate with translators in exchange for almost a million euros a year.

To make matters worse, the approved initiative requires the recognition of Spain as a “plurinational state”, which involves relaunching a proposal from the first Pedro Sanchez that had been parked by the Socialists.

Plurinational delusion

The turn of the script in the PSOE could be caused by the assignments that, in the face of the gallery, ERC requires in exchange for support for their budgets. Pere Aragonès has to present in Catalonia that Sánchez is not the centralist ogre that Junts proclaims, and what better way to do that than to adhere to a demand from the party of Puigdemont.

Socialists are committing a major error by acquiescing in the face of nationalist victimhood and incorporating issues into the public debate that should be overcome. We continue to engage in heated debates about what is a nation and a nationality, whether senators should follow the sessions with headphones as if they were at the UN, at a time that needs high-mindedness, in the middle of a tremendous crisis and without having left even the worst pandemic in the last hundred years.

Languages are to be understood and not to be thrown one another at the head. There are a thousand ways of recognizing the multilingual condition of Spain that do not happen precisely by filling the Senate with translators and turning it into a tower of Babel. It is worrying that the Government, in order not to lose its votes, is willing to give wings to those whose ultimate aspiration is to detonate the political system from within.
