Vylona Jessy’s birthday is January 1 and this year her husband, Captain Felino D’Souza of the Quebec Express, plans to present her with an award from the Montreal Port Authority.

For more than 180 years, the port authority has awarded a gold-headed reed to the first oceangoing vessel of the year to arrive in the Port of Montreal. The Quebec Express of the Hapag-Lloyd shipping line crossed the downstream boundary of the port in Sorel at 12:21 a.m. M.

D’Souza is the son of a sailor who has worked at sea for 27 years. He has been a captain for 16 years.
