Kale, spinach, arugula, and chard aren’t the only popular vegetables to appear in Canadian kitchens. For 2021 and beyond, cabinets will also sport shades of lush green.

According to a ranking commissioned by Uswitch.com of the most desired kitchen colors based on online searches, the top five trending options are white, green, black, blue and gray.

As color experts predicted, mint, sage, emerald and forest hues moved into second place, reflecting a growing desire to embrace nature indoors, particularly in the room where we hang out the most.

“I love this study,” said Sherwin-Williams color marketing director Sue Wadden, who is happy to see green usurp gray in second place. “We went from 2010 to 2020 talking gray and white and it got tedious. Now, more than ever, people want color in their life. “

Sherwin-Williams recently revealed a sophisticated greenish-gray color called Evergreen Fog as its Color of the Year 2022. According to Wadden, colors inspired by nature were already on the rise before 2020 and the pandemic fueled the trend.

“Green is such a universally accepted color. Cross gender lines. It crosses ethnicities and cultures, and because we associate it so strongly with nature, it is a great color to bring into the kitchen, ”he said.

That is not to say that the target does not deserve a higher billing, he added. The timeless appeal of a white kitchen is that it serves as a blank canvas, allowing you to easily swap out colorful accessories as the mood of your style changes. White is also an excellent color to “frame the backdrop to what is going on outside.”

In third and fourth place, respectively, black and blue are classic kitchen color options that often result in eye-catching kitchens.

A more modern approach combines sleek ebony bottom cabinets with white tops to achieve the “tuxedo cabinets” look, but black can also bring out the beautiful details in traditional cabinets, Wadden said. Navy blue can be similarly paired with white and bronze or gold accents for casual elegance in the kitchen.

Gray is still a safe choice in fifth place, but Wadden is encouraged by seeing plum, saffron (orange), yellow, pink and red rounding out the top 10 colors, according to the data.

Garnets and deep purples are already starting to gain momentum in furniture and textiles, so it’s only a matter of time before they show up in cabinets. Terracotta orange, muted yellow, and red are more adventurous colors, but all three stimulate the appetite, based on color psychology, and that can be a good thing in a kitchen.

“I think what we’re seeing here is that people are really starting to embrace color, which is what we’ve talked about for the past few years,” Wadden said. “They see how beneficial it is for well-being and mindfulness and feeling good about the space you’re in … It’s exciting to see.”
