A new public space near the Rosemont metro station

As of the summer, the Société de transport de Montréal (STM) should begin work around the Rosemont metro station in order to create a new public space there, thanks to funding of $2.5 million from the City.

To achieve this, the STM will redevelop the station forecourt, adding trees and planted areas. The City wishes by this approach to offer a “place on a human scale” for the residents of the district.

“Previously, it was 100% mineralized. There was a small entrance to the Rosemont metro that was in a huge ocean of asphalt. There, we will find a lot of greenery. It will be good,” explained François Limoges, mayor of the borough of Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie.

All this will enhance the social housing project for seniors at Îlot Rosemont, which is still under construction and whose inauguration is scheduled for the fall.

The bike path adjacent to the Marc-Favreau library, the neighboring building, will also be improved during the process. The City also wishes to pay “particular” attention to securing pedestrian crossings.

Mr. Limoges believes that the new design will be more welcoming and user-friendly for users.

“It’s an important transit area; in the morning rush hour, there are a lot of people rushing into the metro. We had to find the balance between an area of movement and an area of beauty,” revealed Mr. Limoges.

For its part, the STM indicates that it will take the opportunity to carry out corrective work at the Rosemont station. All the works should be completed at the same time, during the fall.

“The STM is proud to be associated with this project, which contributes to providing an attractive and green living environment for citizens, which is directly related to our mission based on sustainable development”, declared Éric Alan Caldwell, President of the STM board of directors.
