A billion more for road accident victims

Quebec has just corrected an “error of the past” towards elderly road accident victims and will finally pay them the compensation they could no longer receive from the age of 68.

The Minister of Transport, François Bonnardel, announced the measure on Wednesday, the total cost of which amounts to more than 1.1 billion dollars, entirely borne by the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ).

Thus, accident victims aged 68 and over will be retroactively paid the compensation they could not receive since 1990.

According to the decision taken at the time, road accident victims lost 25% of their indemnities per year from the age of 65, until they no longer received any sums at 68.

However, since they had not been able to work, sometimes for decades, because of their disabilities, their retirement pensions were reduced in comparison with those of injured workers, an injustice denounced on several occasions in recent years. .

“We heard them,” said François Bonnardel on Wednesday. They are not numerous, but they are important. Retroactively, this billion, we owe them that.

Quebec calculates that approximately 23,700 people will thus be able to receive more compensation in the long term, including 5,400 who will receive sums retroactively since they are over 68 years old.

The government also intends to increase the amounts paid to them for other reasons. Among other things, they will now be able to receive up to $1,500 per week to pay home helpers to assist them on a daily basis, an amount capped at $900 so far.
