A 110 km/h limit on Quebec highways?

Could Quebec imitate its neighboring province, Ontario, and raise the speed limit on some of its highways to 110 km/h?

The question divides among motorists and automotive experts in Quebec.

The Car Guide’s columnist, Antoine Joubert, points out that the “real” speed limit on motorways is already 120 km/h since the police generally tolerate motorists who drive up to 118 km/h.

“I don’t know of anyone who’s been fined on the highway at 112 km/h,” he says, suggesting instead “climbing the limits at 120 km/h and at 122, you issue a ticket.”

Racing driver Bertrand Godin affirms that “the pilot project in Ontario was well done because we decided to go towards sections that can allow the speed limit to be increased”.

He recalls that speed limits are established to ensure a safe reaction time.

The Ontario government said in a statement that the sections of highway where the maximum speed is increased to 110 km / h were specifically chosen for their ability to receive these higher speed limits.

“An extra kilometer-hour is an increased distance to be able to brake,” he maintains.

Too fast or not fast enough?

While some motorists interviewed by TVA Nouvelles are in favor of increasing the speed limit on highways, others believe that the current 100 km/h is clearly sufficient.

“If we put it at 110 km/h, they will go at 120 km/h, so 130 km/h, so no, I would leave it like that,” says a driver we met at a gas station.

Another believes that the limit should be increased. “110 km/h yes, or else a limit of 120 km/h and we respect the 120 km/h,” he says.
