The issue of public security motivated the debate in the Permanent Commission of the Congress of the Union.
Opposition federal senators and deputies criticized the federal government’s strategy on the matter, while their peers from the government party praised the ongoing government measures to “pacify the country.”
From the rostrum, the PT federal deputy Gerardo Fernández Noroña was clear and direct:
“I am convinced that the economic system must be changed to go deeper into the fundamental causes that are generating this violence and, while that is happening, I am also convinced that we should open a discussion on the legalization of all types of drugs.”
It is evident, he added, that as long as drug traffickers do not take away “the economic power generated by the illegal sale of drugs, which also generates impressive military power, we are unable to reach the bottom.”
Senator Gina Andrea Cruz Blackledge (PAN) described the week’s shootings in Michoacán, Guerrero, Chihuahua, Hidalgo and San Luis Potosí as inconceivable.
“They are the clear example of the state’s surrender, with more than 121,000 people murdered this six-year term; It is already the most violent we have experienced in recent times.”
Without considering, he said, the more than 100,000 disappeared people and the “painful count of 10 murdered women and a massacre on average every day.”
Despite the fact that Mexico has reached record levels, due to “the failed presidential strategy,” he lamented, the Mexican president has already announced over and over again that “the so-called security strategy will not change. That is terrible news for all Mexicans.”
For the PRI, federal deputy Eduardo Zarzosa lamented and described as a shame that the Morenista and allied legislators want to “defend the indefensible” and “cover the sun with a finger,” arguing that “things are very good, that we live in a happy, happy country”.
