Cases multiplied within days after the outbreak began at CHSLD Marguerite-Rocheleau on Dec. 21 or 22, said Paul Arbec, president of Groupe Santé Arbec, who owns the home. As of Monday, 59 of the home’s 112 residents and 39 staff members have tested positive for COVID-19.
“The big challenge with this wave compared to the other waves was that it quickly wiped out the residents in the other waves, but this was truly a community,” Arbec said. “It came from a family member and from our employees.”
While the home awaits more test results, Arbec said residents who tested positive have been isolated in their bedrooms or in designated hot zones with staff dedicated only to those areas. The infected staff have been removed from work and replaced by agency employees.

“We had four people working most of the day for the employment agencies to help us because we lost almost a third of our staff in three or four days,” Arbec said. “The other waves were difficult because everyone got sick very quickly, both employees and staff, this time we were able to react.”
Arbec said there were only “about five or six hours where people were missing and we had minimal staff.”
One of the challenges Arbec said the CHSLD has faced during the outbreak has been delays in receiving test results, but said the house is “ about to reverse the situation. ”
He also said that he noticed symptoms were very mild among those infected, apart from two who were not vaccinated.
