“2022 must be the year in which we end the pandemic,” said the WHO director.
“A canceled event is better than a canceled life. Better to cancel now and celebrate later than to celebrate now and mourn later […]. This is very serious and we are very concerned about omicron, “he said.
The top leader of the United Nations international health body urged governments to exercise maximum caution in the coming weeks and avoid events with the presence of many people and that could become super-spreaders of the virus.
While he was sympathetic to the fed up of citizens, insisted that the fastest way to “return to normality” is “to make the difficult decisions that have to be made.”
“There is no doubt that the increased social mix during the holiday period in many countries will lead to an increase in cases, saturation of health systems and more deaths,” predicted Tedros.
The epidemiologist leading the WHO response to coronavirus, Maria Van Kerkhove, followed suit by announcing that his family “has made the difficult decision to postpone their Christmas trip to the United States,” his country of origin.
In that sense, the WHO maintains that the Omicron variant is now the dominant coronavirus strain in the United States, while it calls for more efforts to guarantee the end of the pandemic next year.
The new, rapidly spreading variant led some countries to once again take tough restrictive measures.
