A co-owner of a restaurant and caterer in Regina is in the hospital after a tragic fall over the weekend.

Peg’s Kitchen namesake Peg Leippi is currently in the hospital after sustaining life-changing injuries from a fall on the morning of December 11.

However, what the family also shares after the incident are Leippi’s battles with mental health over the years.

Alyssa Leippi, who is Peg’s daughter-in-law, detailed how the business has suffered tensions in recent times, mainly due to the impacts caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

A financial hit to the business on Thanksgiving resulted in Peg’s mental health being further affected, according to Alyssa.

She shared that Leippi tried to end her life on Saturday.

“We are blessed that she is still alive and with us,” added Alyssa.

TO GoFundMe page was created by Alyssa on Monday to help raise funds for her road to recovery.

By late Tuesday afternoon, the fundraiser had raised more than $ 31,000 of its goal of $ 150,000.

“It’s beyond anything we could have imagined,” Alyssa said. “I know how much they value the community and now we can see how much the community really values ​​them.”

The page shares how Peg suffered multiple injuries from the incident, including a broken clavicle, broken scapula, multiple fractures and broken vertebrae in her neck and back, bruised lungs, a broken pelvis, and massive trauma to her lower back.

Doctors say the trauma to his neck and back “will likely result in paralysis from the chest down.”

“She is still in the surgical ICU. There will be a bit of contact and review over the next few days, but she is on the mend, ”shared Alyssa. “He has a long way to go, but with all the support we are seeing, I know he will make it.”

The family said one of their biggest goals now is to raise awareness about mental illness in hopes that they can help others facing similar challenges regarding mental health.

“If someone ever knew my mother-in-law or went into the business, I would never have expected them to be battling mental illness. She was the happiest person ever, ”Alyssa said.

“For us as a family, we want to make sure that no one goes through this and that no one has to deal with what we are feeling right now. Know that if you are struggling, you are not alone. “

The GoFundMe website notes that Peg underwent emergency surgery on Saturday and will soon have at least one more surgery ahead of her.
