I believe that the locals who represent Windsor municipal employees should be very careful how they deal with the City of Windsor’s mandate to vaccinate civic employees.

David Petten, head of the local union representing the city’s interior workers, was reported to have said that the union supports vaccination, but that members should be able to make their own decisions. Decision to do what? Procrastinate or finally refuse to get vaccinated?

There is an order from a legal authority. Refusing to get vaccinated (unless you have been granted a legal exemption) before a certain date and the loss of your paid employment in the city should be the immediate result.

I feel like the time for personal decision making and procrastination is gone. We are still dealing with COVID-19 in this city. I think people who don’t get vaccinated are playing a dangerous game. A member of the public could be infected with this virus transmitted by city employees.

Union leaders should put their foot down and get people to do the right thing. Put personal decision-making aside and find reasons to do it later. I think this has become a life and death moment, so the time is now.

Get vaccinated. Now.
