Ontario Reports Less Than 600 New COVID-19 Cases, 5 More Deaths | The Canadian News

Ontario reported 598 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, as week-over-week case counts continue to rise. The total number of provincial cases now stands at 605,846.

For comparison, last Friday he saw 563 new cases and the Friday before he saw 419. All three Thursdays saw similar test volumes in the 30,000 range.

Of the 598 new cases registered, the data showed that 298 were unvaccinated, 24 were partially vaccinated, 222 were fully vaccinated, and for 54 people the vaccination status was unknown.

According to friday report, 63 cases were recorded in Toronto, 55 in Simcoe Muskoka, 43 in the Peel and Windsor-Essex region, 37 in Ottawa and the Durham region, 35 in the Southwest, 32 in the York region. All other local public health units reported fewer than 30 new cases in the provincial report.

The death toll in the province has risen to 9,921, as five more deaths were recorded.

Vaccinations, recoveries, tests, 7-day average in Ontario

At 8 p.m. Thursday, 13,468 vaccines (4,804 for a first injection and 8,664 for a second injection) were administered on the last day.

There are more than 11.1 million people fully immunized with two doses, representing 85.3% of the eligible population (12 years and older). The coverage of the first dose is 88.6%.

Meanwhile, 591,525 Ontario residents were reported to have recovered from COVID-19, which is about 98 percent of known cases. The solved cases increased by 462 compared to the previous day.

Active cases in Ontario now stand at 4,400, up from the day before when it was at 4,269, and has risen since Nov. 5 when it was at 3,395. At the peak of the second wave coronavirus surge in January, active cases reached just over 30,000. In the third wave in April, active cases exceeded 43,000.

The seven-day average has now reached 537, which is up from the previous week when it was 404. A month ago, the seven-day average was around 500.

The government said 30,230 tests were processed in the previous 24 hours. Currently 11,008 tests are being investigated.

The positivity of the test reached 2.5 percent. Last week, the test positivity was 1.8 percent.

Ontario Hospitalizations

Ontario reported that 207 people in general hospital wards had COVID-19 (four fewer than the day before) with 130 patients in intensive care units (two fewer) and 107 patients in intensive care units on a ventilator (one less).

As of Wednesday, there were 13 Saskatchewan patients in Ontario, all in ICU, officials said.

At the peak of the third wave, which was the worst wave of hospitalizations, the province saw up to 900 ICU patients with COVID and almost 2,400 in general hospital wards.

For those in general hospital wards with COVID, 74 were not vaccinated, 14 were partially vaccinated, and 49 were fully vaccinated. For those in ICU, 59 were not vaccinated while 3 were partially vaccinated and 9 were fully vaccinated.

Provincial officials noted this new dataset with vaccination status for hospitalizations it will grow and improve over time as more information is collected. There may also be a discrepancy due to how and when information from both is collected.

Worrisome variants in Ontario

Officials have listed disaggregated data for the new VOCs (variants of interest) detected so far in the province, consisting of:

Delta: 22052 variant cases, 45 more than the previous day. This strain dominates the fourth wave of Ontario.

Alpha: 146,508 variant cases, which has not changed from the previous day. This strain dominated the third wave of Ontario.

Beta: 1,503 variant cases, unchanged from the previous day.

Gamma: 5,231 variant cases, which has not changed from the previous day.
