Re: We “ settled ” on the new Civic, no wonder long faces, column, Oct 2

It’s a done deal, so whether some of us like it or not, the new hospital will be built across from Lake Dow, and I, for one, have finished analyzing to death how it will affect “the birds, the bees and the flowers and the trees and the moon above ”for years to come. So that’s all.

But two things made me laugh when reading Kelly Egan’s column: “We settled on the New Civic.”

“Grandma didn’t take No. 61 to emerge in the middle of a stroke” was one, I think I actually laughed out loud, and the other was Paul Saurette from the Dow’s Lake Residents Association who said, “We’re doing this from scratch. Let’s do it smart. “

Like I said, I finished analyzing the new Ottawa hospital to death, so all I can say is, “Good luck trying to do something stupid smart.”

With apologies to Avril Lavigne for the title of this letter, however, it seems appropriate. When Justin Trudeau was inexplicably voted for the third time, I felt like it would only be a matter of time before he tripped over his own two feet again, but, my gosh, I didn’t think it would happen that fast.

For those who voted for Trudeau a few weeks ago, ask yourself this: if they had been elected, would Erin O’Toole, Jagmeet Singh or even one of the leaders of the “fringe” party have escaped to surf on September 30? Or would they have attended an event more in keeping with the meaning of the day?

I wonder if he brought the famous photogenic teddy bear with him or if he felt there was no need for such an accessory with another election win in the bag. Shame on anyone who drank this guy’s Kool-Aid one more time.

STUDENTS SUFFERING

The global pandemic has evidently taken over the world. However, the greatest damage has been in high school students. Students have been losing motivation, especially when everything is online. During these difficult times, unfortunately, school boards and the education system have failed us by constantly changing rules, schedules, and alternating between face-to-face and online education. This is mainly due to poor and last minute planning.

The uncertainty of the situation causes great anxiety among adolescents. Students are forced to learn material at twice the speed and for long periods of time, increasing students’ stress levels, while their readiness to learn has decreased more than ever.

Schools and the education system should make more efforts to support students during these times. If this is not addressed now, the students risk fighting mental demons for the rest of their lives. The psychological and physical damage that the pandemic has caused is tremendous, and social workers, teachers and doctors must be prepared for the future consequences.

Are school officials aware of the damage their poor planning has caused?
