9 out of 10 journalist murders remain unsolved: UNESCO

87% of journalist murders Since 2006, they remain unresolved, Unesco warned this Thursday, indicating that most of the 55 perpetrated in 2021 occurred in Latin America and in Asia-Pacific.

“Once again, in 2021, too many journalists paid the ultimate price for exposing the truth,” Unesco Director General Audrey Azoulay said in a statement, calling to “do more to ensure” their protection.

According to data from Observatory of Murdered Journalists From the UN cultural organization, 55 journalists and media workers lost their lives in 2021, “the fewest annual deaths in more than a decade.”

“However, the impunity of these crimes is still widespread, “adds the statement from the Paris-based organization. Of the 1,284 murders registered since 2006 in the world, 87% remain unsolved.

Unesco, like Reporters Without Borders, the International Federation of Journalists and Fundamedios, did weeks ago, highlighted the complicated situation for reporters in Latin America and the Caribbean.

This region, together with the Asia-Pacific region, accounted for the majority of murders in 2021: 14 and 23, respectively. Nine of them lost their lives in Mexico, and one in Colombia, Haiti, Brazil, Guatemala and Ecuador, according to data from the Observatory.

Beyond the murders, UNESCO highlighted the “high rates” of imprisonment, assaults, harassment and intimidation of journalists in the world. In April, an agency report alerted female informants to online harassment.
