Scandal for a t-shirt at the Blue Salon

During her first speech in the National Assembly, in 2018, Catherine Dorion caused a scandal because of her clothing. The elected official wore a sweater on which appeared the name of the Franco-Ontarian poet Patrice Desbiens.

Catherine Dorion was then criticized for not taking her role as a member of parliament seriously – since she wore a t-shirt at the Salon bleu – and for being more of an activist than a politician.

His clothing, however, also made people happy.

His supportive colleague and deputy for Jean-Lesage Sol Zanetti was criticized for wearing jeans and sneakers.

After the controversy, the President of the National Assembly, François Paradis, specified that the deputies had to wear “business attire”: “Men are usually expected to wear a jacket and tie, and women, appropriate attire.”

From Dr.Martens in high heels for Halloween

After many criticisms of her casual clothes, particularly her Dr. Martens boots, Catherine Dorion took advantage of Halloween 2019 to change her look…for a day.

The deputy had again been criticized – in particular by François Paradis – for having posed in the Red Room, a place usually reserved for official ceremonies and major consultations.

After the famous photo, she told Radio-Canada that her intention was to laugh at the “codes”, but not at her colleagues in the National Assembly.

The sartorial controversies didn’t stop there. A week after Halloween, Catherine Dorion was refused access to the Blue Room because she was wearing a cotton swaddle. She then decided to leave. AT Everybody talks about itshe had claimed to have already worn this same cotton cotton several times, but that “it did not pass” that day.

The third link, “a line of coke”

Catherine Dorion, who represents the riding of Taschereau, in the heart of Quebec, has always opposed the third link, a tunnel project between Lévis and Quebec that the government of François Legault wishes to carry out.

In 2018, she notably posted a video on social networks titled “The third link is like a line of coke”.

“Basically, a new highway is a bit like a line of coke. The world says to itself: “Ah, well, I’ll take this, I’ll be less drunk, I’ll have energy…” Except that an hour later, what happens? You need another line of coke! So, that’s our problem, actually. It is a problem of dependence on the automobile, ”she explained.

Like many experts, she maintains that the project would result in increasing automobile traffic rather than reducing it.

Driving an SUV and fighting climate change?

At the start of her mandate, many were surprised to learn that the MP, who promotes her environmental values, was driving an SUV, more specifically a 2015 Subaru Crosstrek. She was then criticized for making a speech that was not consistent with his actions.

According to the main interested party, it is not because we are fighting against climate change that we are perfect on the environmental level. “We have lives filled to death, we make efforts, but at some point, there is a limit to what we can do, the political powers must [s’en chargent]“, she had insisted.

Fight against hate and misinformation

In the spring of 2021, Catherine Dorion launched, with Liberal MP Joël Lightbound, a movement to denounce the spread of hate speech and misinformation in certain Quebec media. About thirty public figures had joined their voices to those of the two elected officials.

“Whether through misinformation, knowingly stating false or inaccurate things as evidence, creating false and defamatory amalgams, or using abusive and/or discriminatory language [certains individus] participate in the degradation of the collective discussion of Quebecers, “said the Freedom of Oppression collective, in a statement.
