46% of Current COVID Hospitalizations in Ontario Are Incidental: New Data | The Canadian News

The new data indicates that 46 percent of people currently in Ontario hospitals with COVID-19 were admitted for other reasons.

The Ontario government released the data after indicating for some time that it would begin to differentiate between those being treated for COVID-19-related illnesses and incidental admissions.

“We are updating Ontario’s public reports to distinguish patients hospitalized due to # COVID19 from those admitted for other reasons with COVID-19,” Health Minister Christine Elliott tweeted Tuesday morning.

Of the COVID-positive intensive care admissions, about 83 percent were admitted due to the virus, while about 17 percent were admitted for other reasons. The number of people in ICU with COVID was not immediately available Tuesday morning.

The province also reported 7,951 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, though that’s an understatement due to recently implemented testing restrictions.
