22 senior Belarusian officials sanctioned by Ottawa


Canada announced the imposition of sanctions against 22 senior Belarusian defense ministry officials “who supported the attack, including allowing their country to serve as a launching pad for the Russian invasion.”

The government announcement comes a day after the decision to ban Belarusian planes from Canadian airspace.

Earlier this week, Russia responded to Canadian sanctions by imposing sanctions on 313 Canadians, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and members of his cabinet.

They are also banned from entering Russia.

Russia unveiled the measures as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky delivered a virtual address to the House of Commons of Parliament, during which he reiterated his call to secure the skies above Ukraine.

The same day, Canada announced the addition of 15 other Russian officials to its blacklist.

Since the annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014, Canada has imposed sanctions against more than 900 individuals and entities.
