According to the Ontario Medical Association (OMA), the COVID-19 pandemic has delayed an estimated 15.9 million surgeries, diagnostic tests, screenings and other medical procedures that should have been performed in Ontario.

This equates to more than one medical procedure missed by every Ontario resident, OMA President Dr. Adam Kassam said in a briefing this week.

“COVID-19 cases in Ontario are finally declining,” he said. “But three significant waves of infection have created a long delay in surgeries, diagnostic tests and other health care procedures.”

In a statement, the WCO estimated that the six main lost or delayed procedures in the province are:

  • Magnetic resonances (477,301).
  • Cancer treatments (269,683).
  • Cataract surgeries (90,136).
  • Knee prosthesis (38.263).
  • Hip prosthesis (16.506).
  • Coronary bypass surgery (3,163).

These estimates are in addition to the number of people already on the waiting list before the pandemic.

“We have seen fewer preventive screenings for disease, such as mammograms for breast cancer, colon cancer screenings and PAP tests for cervical cancer,” said Dr. Sohal Goyal, physician at family and president of the Mississauga Halton Primary Care Network, who spoke at the WCO briefing.

“Fewer heart tests have been done for heart disease. Less blood tests to detect diseases such as high cholesterol levels ”.

This means the kind of early detection that leads to early treatment or disease prevention isn’t happening as much as it should, Goyal said.

In addition, he said, many patients with chronic diseases, such as diabetes, are not being controlled.

The WCO also highlighted that mental health problems have increased during the pandemic and will require continued attention for years to come.

The elimination of the arrears would take between four and 22 months, depending on the procedure, if the health personnel worked at 120%, something that is not sustainable.
