(Quebec) Life expectancy at birth decreased in 2020, by five months for men and eight months for women, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, reports the Institut de la statistique du Québec ( ISQ) Wednesday morning.
“The magnitude of these declines is an exception, because life expectancy tends to increase over the years,” said the ISQ in a press release.
This drop in life expectancy at birth is a direct consequence of deaths linked to the pandemic, explains the ISQ. The number of deaths increased by 10% between 2019 and 2020, while the average annual increase was less than 2% over the last decade.
Life expectancy at birth in 2020 was 80.6 years for men and 84.0 years for women.
