18-year-old dies in hospital after pedestrian accident in Yonge-Richmond

An 18-year-old man died in hospital after a shocking crash in which a driver struck pedestrians in downtown Toronto on the afternoon of Boxing Day, police say.

The man had been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries following the accident shortly after 2 p.m. at Richmond Street West and Yonge Street. He was pronounced dead on Saturday, Toronto police said in a news release.

According to the police account, the accident occurred after a 32-year-old male driver of a westbound Hyundai crossed the path of a 22-year-old male driver of a Kia, who was also traveling westbound. The collision caused the Kia to roll sideways and hit several pedestrians.

At the time, police said a total of eight people were taken to the hospital, two of them in mortal danger. Two victims with minor injuries were children.

Fire services said the trapped driver had been released when they arrived and was in stable condition.

The investigation is ongoing by members of the Traffic Services. Anyone with information or images of the dash cam incident is asked to contact investigators.
