The suspect, whose name cannot be revealed due to a publication ban, is charged with second-degree murder. He is one of two suspects in the case. A 16-year-old suspect, also charged with second-degree murder, renounced his right to bail in October.
“I was praying for this, because I love my son very much, and it’s heart-wrenching,” said Charla Dopwell, the victim’s mother. “Whatever happened today is the right decision. (The accused) needs to stay inside. I don’t need to come out.
“People like that don’t need to be on the street to attack more people, more children, or my other children. I have children. I don’t want him coming out and stabbing up my other children. I’m satisfied that the judge said he has to stay inside, very much so.”
Dopwell-Bailey was stabbed outside his school in the Côte–des–Neiges—Notre–Dame–de–Grâce borough on Oct. 18. He died after being taken to a hospital. He is one of several minors killed in Montreal in the past year.
