1.1 million abused women in 31 states are treated in centers

From January 1, 2019 to June 30, 2021, the Justice Centers for Women (CJM) in the country handled one million 110,710 cases, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi).

The report “Justice Centers for Women (CJM) in Mexico 2021” revealed that emotional violence is the main problem reported by women who go to justice centers, followed by physical and sexual violence, while their partners or sentimental ex-partners are the main aggressors.

The Inegi warns that said information is not definitive because the justice centers do not have complete information on the characteristics of the women served, the situation of violence or the aggressors, since a high number of unspecified registrations is observed.

During 2019, the care of at least 423,177 women in 47 centers was reported; by 2020, 392,743 women were served in 50 centers, while, from January 1 to June 30, 2021, 294,790 women were supported in 53 justice centers in the face of some type of violence.

108,055 cases of other types of violence were recorded, including harassment; violence against sexual and reproductive rights; digital; teacher; femicide; institutional; labor; obstetric; politics; cybernetics; familiar; deprivation of liberty and abduction of sons and daughters.

By age groups, the largest number of women attended was concentrated in the ranges of 20 to 29 years and 30 to 39 years, followed by women of 40 to 49 years.

In the same period, and due to the violence suffered, 203,193 women (18.2% of the total attended) filed a complaint, while 45,455 decided not to take any legal action. According to the Inegi report, until June 30, there were 265,559 open investigation files for violence against women treated at the CJM.

In 2021, of the total number of women served, 19.7% filed complaints with the Public Ministry, 8.4% filed a complaint, and 4.1% did not file a complaint or complaint.

While in the three periods studied, between 48.9 and 55.5% of the closed files were due to desertion of the woman, followed by the conclusion of the comprehensive care process. Thus, in 2019, 9,801 files were closed; in 2020 there were 13,887 and in 2021, 7,121.
