The Women’s Enterprise Skills Training of Windsor (WEST) is holding a virtual gala Tuesday evening to mark the occasion with Dr. Beverly Jacobs as the keynote speaker.

Jacobs is the Senior Advisor to the President on Indigenous Relations and Outreach at the University of Windsor and an associate professor in the law faculty. A noted writer and researcher, Jacobs is a member of the Mohawk Nation of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy, Bear Clan.

It’s a good reason to celebrate because of the situation we’re in now

“International Women’s Day is an opportunity to celebrate and to honor all women,” Jacobs said. “The focus of my presentation is to provide words of encouragement and empowerment during these difficult times living within a pandemic.”

The global theme for 2022 International Women’s Day is #BreakTheBias.

“Dr. Jacobs is a great fit in so many ways,” said Rose Anguiano Hurst, WEST’s Executive Director. “It’s such an honor to have her de ella, she’s definitely a specialist in working to end violence against Indigenous people and in helping to restore lost beliefs, lost values and lost traditions.”

WEST is encouraging everyone to become part of a break-the-bias movement by being more aware of unconscious bias, stereotypes and discrimination in order to create a world that is diverse, equitable and inclusive.

WEST uses International Women’s Day to celebrate some of its inspirational clients who have achieved their goals with the help of training and programming. WEST also acknowledges its community partners and employers who are committed to the organization’s skills training programs.

“We thought International Women’s Day is a great way to recognize our clients and community partners,” said Hurst of the Journey to Success Awards that will be given out to 13 clients and 13 sponsors. “Even 26 years later, I still get emotional when I hear some of the success stories of our clients.”

The roots of International Women’s Day reach back to 1977 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution calling on member states to proclaim a day for women’s rights and international peace.

Canada chose March 8.

Tickets for the gala are $25 per person and are available online at westofwindsor.com. Ticketholders will receive a link prior to the event. Networking starts at 5:30 pm with the formal program beginning at 6 pm

Hurst noted the importance of holding the gala, even virtually, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“It’s a good reason to celebrate because of the situation we’re in now,” she said. “This gives us a reason to celebrate and a distraction from the two years of living how we’ve been living. It shows we’re still engaging and still helping people move forward.”
