Leila Fadell, morning edition: This album, Harry’s house, was recorded all over the world: Los Angeles, Tokyo, Maine, London. That is indicative of the life you lead, the life of a traveler. So what is home to you?

Harry styles: I think for me home is just about friends. While this is such a personal album, and it has a lot to do with my own journey to find a home, I also feel like it’s very dedicated to my friends.

I always felt like I would land in a certain place, or a certain house and feel like, ‘Oh, this is the house I’ve been looking for.’ And I think, like happiness, it’s not necessarily a final resting place and it’s a journey and it’s kind of peaks and valleys of happiness, sadness, all the things that make you feel alive.

The “Matilda” here, is it by Roald Dahl?

He’s definitely dressed up as Roald-Dahl-Matilda, yes. It was kind of like okay, we’ll disguise it as talking to Matilda now that she’s grown up, that she’s been mistreated by her family, how would you talk to her?

I think people are so guilty about things that they don’t necessarily need to feel guilty. It is your right to protect the space around you and be protective of yourself and take care of yourself. I think it was a time where it’s not necessarily my place to do someone else’s experience on me, but I just want to assure you that I was listening.

The single “As It Was” has such a fun energy, but when you listen to the lyrics, there’s nostalgia… there’s sadness. What moment are you singing about?

It is about metamorphosis, about getting lost, about finding oneself. Accept the fact that life hits you at different times, not when you expect it. That’s wonderful, but with these wonderful things comes a complex emotional journey.[s].

You’ve talked about trying to figure out how not to be defined by what you do, trying to figure out who you are separate from that.

I think because I started so young, it became something like: that’s who I am. I don’t know if I ever stopped long enough to realize what it was like if I didn’t. But I think about getting to a place where I feel like, ‘This is what I do and I love it, but it’s not necessarily who I am.’ It just feels like a much healthier place to operate and make music.
