Repair of highway 307 begins in Playa del Carmen

Cancun, QR. Rehabilitation work has already begun on the central median of federal highway 307 at the height of Playa del Carmen, after the works that were being carried out there were canceled due to the change in the layout of Section 5 of the mayan train.

This was confirmed by the municipal president of Solidarity, Lili Campos, who said that the works include the construction of the median from Playa del Carmen to Tulum, the maintenance of the 3.7-kilometer bridge from the same site and the 600-meter vehicular bridge from Puerto Aventuras. .

All these works will be supervised by the Solidarity government, in conjunction with the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur) and the SICT (Secretariat of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation).

“They are already removing everything, the infrastructure and everything that has to do with the machinery; not only is the area going to be recovered, but it is also going to be improved and reforested, they have 460 plants in their inventory to put back those that had been removed,” said Lenin Amaro Betancourt, leader of the Business Coordinating Council (CCE) of the Mayan Riviera.

The businessman stressed that above all they managed to make themselves heard to change the route of the Mayan Train and that it no longer pass through the urban area, but through the peripheral, after technical studies that showed that it was unfeasible for it to continue along Highway 307.

He added that they will be meeting monthly with the new head of Fonatur to follow up the work of the Mayan Train, and that the rehabilitation works of the center of Playa del Carmen can be ready in the shortest possible time.

Costs and estimates

Unofficial estimates speak of nearly 500 million pesos invested in the canceled works of the Mayan Train in the center of highway 307 at the height of Playa del Carmen, which divides the coastal zone from the residential zone of the city.

The preliminary works extended over 15 months to the center of the highway, during which they lifted the pavement of a section of approximately 2 kilometers, along which road signs were placed so that vehicles could slow down.

Rogelio Jiménez Pons, former director of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur), confirmed the start of work from mid-2021.

The former head of Fonatur then explained that geophysical studies were carried out, which were supposed to allow them to determine where the columns would be placed for the elevated section on which the road would run.

The set of previous studies, plus the deployment of hundreds of workers and machinery, the dismantling and transplanting of more than 20,000 trees, work meetings, acquisition of material, design of wildlife crossings, all of this as a whole could exceed 500 million pesos, according to conservative figures, which has been released by the councilor of the Solidaridad city council, Marciano Toledo.

In addition to this, voices have begun to emerge such as that of the local president of the National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (Canirac), Juan Carlos Hernández, who requested Fonatur to leave federal highway 307, which runs through the Riviera Maya, just as he found it before starting the works of the Mayan Train.

He recalled that those in charge of the work removed dozens of palm trees, trees, signs and light poles on the federal highway, which has generated serious environmental and road problems on that stretch of road.

“Returning things to the way they were is what we ask for. We are not asking for any improvement, plain and simple that all the roads, the lights, the trees, everything that was in the conditions in which they were, remain.”

“The main thing, I think we already achieved it, which was that it will not cross Playa del Carmen, I feel that it is a great achievement,” said the leader of the area’s restaurateurs.
