Niagara Falls Man Charged With Theft Of Historic Bronze Statue From City Cemetery – Hamilton | The Canadian News

Niagara Falls Police arrested and charged one of the two suspects they believe are responsible for the theft of the statue of Lieutenant General Drummond from a city cemetery.

A 43-year-old man from the Falls was picked up by Niagara Regional Police on Thursday after detectives were able to identify the suspect through clues, however the bronze statue has yet to be recovered.

The 150 kilogram (330 pound) piece disappeared sometime between the early hours of the morning of September 27 and the morning of September 29.

Drummond Hill Cemetery is a nationally recognized heritage site, better known as the Battle of Lundy battlefield.

Investigators say moving the statue would have been “laborious” and was likely taken with the aid of a vehicle due to its size and weight.

They also say that there is a possibility that it is no longer in one piece.

“One tactic used by metal thieves to mislead or hide evidence is to cut the stolen metal item into smaller pieces so that it can be more easily transported and sold,” police said in an investigation update Friday.

“Members of the public and scrap metal recyclers are asked to keep an eye out for the statue.”

The statue is just under one meter long (31 inches) and one meter high (36 inches) and has an estimated value of more than $ 10,000, according to police.
