MUST-WATCH: Evil superheroes beware of the Boys

A cult favorite show filmed in Toronto has returned to the MUST-WATCH Top 10! But will it fly to the top spot, or will that go the latest project from one of Canada’s most beloved (and reviled) filmmakers? Or will it go to a gay romantic comedy adaptation of a Jane Austen novel? You’ll have to keep reading to find out!

Irma Vep

Where to watch: Crave

We’re starting off this week with something for fans of French cinema!

Irma Vep is a new miniseries that’s a remake of a beloved French film from the 90s by the same name. Both the original film and remake are created by French auteur Oliver Assayas. The original starred his then wife Maggie Cheung (from In the Mood for Love) as herself. She’d been cast in a remake of classic French serial Les Vampires playing the famous role of Irma Vep, the burglar in a black latex suit. This new series sees alice vikander (from Ex Machina) playing fictional American actress Mira, who’s taking on the role after a scandal. And just like the original, the thin line between reality and fiction begins to blur.

The first episode of this miniseries premiered on Crave on Monday, June 6th!

Fire Island

Where to watch: Disney+

Now, it’s time for a little trip to the island!

Fire Island is a new romantic comedy that’s inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. It stars two gay East Asian comedians, Joel Kim Booster (from Shrill) and Bowen-Yang (from Saturday Night Live). They’re two best friends, who with a group of other gay friends, travel to the paradise island known as Fire Island. It’s a haven for gay men to have fun, dance the night away, and find true love. While the two are on the island, they each meet men who might just be perfect for them. But will love succeed, or will the flame of Fire Island be extinguished? This film also stars Margaret Cho (from Drop Dead Diva), James Scully (from You), and Conrad Ricamora (from How to Get Away with Murder).

The Orville: New Horizons

Where to watch: Disney+

Now, it’s time for a trip to outer space!

The Orville: New Horizons is the first season of the sci-fi show not to air on Fox, as it’s now been picked up by Hulu. This is a semi-serious parody of Star Trek, created by longtime fan Seth Macfarlane. This new season finds the crew of the Orville heading through Krill space into unknown territory. Isaac (played by Mark Jackson from That Peter Kay Thing) finds himself the subject of intense racism on the ship after his species tried to exterminate all biological life last season. As for Captain Mercer (played by seth mafarlane from Family Guy) and Commander Grayson (played by Adrianne Palicki from Friday Night Lights), it’s still unclear if they will get back together or not.

The Boys (Season 3)

Where to watch: Amazon Prime Video

Next up, it’s time for a return to a world of corporate superheroes!

Shot in Toronto, the third season of theBoys is out now! The superhero dramedy sees the titular group partially split up. Hughie (played by Jack Quaid from Star Trek: Lower Decks) is working for the government’s bureau of superhero affairs, occasionally hiring what remains of the Boys to deal with rogue superheroes. Butcher (played by Karl Urban from Dredd) is more calm, but still filled with anger at superheroes. He discovers a cover-up involving an older superhero team, and a new drug that gives people powers for 24 hours only. Meantime, the world’s ‘greatest’ hero Homelander (played by Antony Starr from Banshee) is slowly losing his popularity and his grip on sanity.

You can watch the first three episodes of this season now, with other episodes coming out weekly!

Crimes of the Future

Where to watch: Cinemas

Last but certainly not least, it’s time for the return of one of Canada’s greatest auteurs!

Crimes of the Future
Viggo Mortensen as Saul in Crimes of the Future, courtesy of NEON.

Crimes of the Future is the latest film from David Cronenberg, and his first body horror film in over 20 years. Returning to the genre that made him famous, this film stars Viggo Mortensen (from a History of Violence) and Lea Seydoux (from No Time to Die) as a romantic couple who conduct pain-based performance art. Pain has been completely eliminated in this world, and Mortensen’s character from him is afflicted with a condition that enables his body to grow new unnecessary organs. Their performance art involves theatrical surgery taking these organs out. This draws the attention of Kristen Stewart’s (from Certain Women) character, who works for the government and becomes almost too fascinated with this macabre sensuality.

You can watch this film in cinemas now!
