Face masks will still be required in Windsor-Essex hospitals after the provincial mask mandate expires.

Although masking will no longer be mandatory in Ontario settings deemed high risk starting June 11, Windsor Regional Hospital, Erie Shores HealthCare, and Hotel-Dieu Grace Healthcare are keeping their mask rules in place.

In a joint statement on Wednesday, the three hospitals said mask policies and procedures will continue to apply to all visitors, patients (as tolerated), and staff “regardless of what area they work in.” Anyone entering a hospital must continue to wear a medical-grade mask.

The mask requirement “takes into consideration the higher-risk environment” in which all three hospitals operate “with many elderly and immune compromised patients,” the statement said.

Earlier this month, Ontario’s chief medical officer of health, Kieran Moore, announced his directive to maintain existing masking requirements in select higher-risk indoor settings until June 11.
