Manitoba minister receives backlash for insensitive tweet about his wife shoveling snow after a 12-hour shift at the hospital

After Manitoba Cabinet Minister Jon Reyes tweeted about his wife Cynthia, a frontline worker, shoveling snow after a half-day shift at the hospital, many were quick to call him insensitive.

Reyes, who is the minister for economic development and jobs, took a snapshot of his wife from inside their home, as she dipped one foot in front of the other in the heavy snow on the driveway.

“Even after a 12-hour night shift at the hospital last night, my wife still has the energy to shovel the driveway. God bless her and all of our leaders. It’s time to make him breakfast, ”Reyes said in her tweet on Saturday.

By Sunday, the incident had taken over Twitter, TikTok, and more. To make matters worse, the Los Angeles tabloid TMZ took notice of the tweet, noting that Reyes had been tweeting about tennis the night before, rather than the state of emergency from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Considering the invaluable work frontline workers have provided to millions of patients around the world since the pandemic began, Reyes’ tweet did not sit well with many.

Social media users were quick to criticize the minister for his actions despite Cynthia’s attempts to quell the uproar as she tweeted, “All I wanted to do was shovel!”

Thomas Lukaszuk, a former Manitoba cabinet minister, shared his dismay in assuring the public that Reyes’ behavior did not reflect all political husbands.

Twitter user Traci Law questioned Reyes why he didn’t help his wife shovel.

While others were creative with their memes, sharing their disappointment with humor.
