Defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland ended Leylah Fernandez’s season debut when she beat the 19-year-old Laval 6-1, 6-2 on Thursday in the Adelaide International second round.

Fernandez struggled with his serve. He committed five double faults and faced nine break points. Swiatek, the 2020 French Open champion, never experienced a break point and won 86 percent of points on her first serve.

The Adelaide tournament is the first of two preparation events for Fernandez before competing at the Australian Open starting January 16. Next week she will play in a WTA 500 event in Sydney.

Australian No. 1 seed Ash Barty struggled before beating American teenager Coco Gauff 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, but two other seeds were eliminated. Kaja Juvan of Slovenia took advantage of 18 double faults by second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus to win 7-6, 6-1 and American Shelby Rogers defeated third-seeded Maria Sakkari of Greece 7-6, 2-6, 6-4.
