Defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland ended Leylah Fernandez’s season debut when she beat the 19-year-old Laval 6-1, 6-2 on Thursday in the Adelaide International second round.

The Adelaide tournament is the first of two preparation events for Fernandez before competing at the Australian Open starting January 16. Next week she will play in a WTA 500 event in Sydney.
