It’s ‘Turrono’ not ‘Toron-to’: Fans react as ABC’s ‘The Bachelor’ comes to Toronto for a romantic getaway

The latest getaway for those looking for love? According to “The Bachelor” on ABC, “Toronto, Canada.”

On Monday’s episode, bachelor Clayton Echard and the 12 remaining contestants embarked on their first international trip, heading north of the border to visit Toronto’s tourist attractions, spanning the CN Tower to the Distillery District. They even participated in a roast session hosted by hometown comedian Russell Peters.

That left social media with a ton of ammunition for hot takes — grilling everything from the awkward pronunciation of Toronto (all T’s announced), to the couples taking shots of maple syrup.

If you thought that was enough Canadian stereotype overkill, wait, there’s more — including game of street hockey played with a mini net which Echard called a “staple in Canada,” BeaverTails and a trip to the Berczy Park Dog Fountain on Front St. East .

Here are some take-aways from Bachelor fans:

Toronto is pronounced ‘Turrono,’ not ‘Toron-to.’

“You have to explore ‘Toron-to’ from above, right?” Echard asks contestant Gabby Windey before they hop in a private helicopter for a birdseye view of the city’s skyline.

With that line, Canadian fans were quick to take issue with Echard’s pronunciation of “Toronto” — saying he put too much emphasis on the second “T.” It seems like Echard wasn’t told to pronounce “Toronto” like “Turrono.”

“I wish the ladies would pronounce the “T” in Clayton’s name as hard as he pronounces the “T” in ToronTo,” chirped a Twitter user.

Why not Europe for a romantic getaway?

While the trip was technically international, some fans said they would be disappointed if they were promised to trip abroad and landed in Toronto.

“I would be so disappointed if I went on the Bachelor and the ‘international’ destination was TORONTO,” a Twitter user wrote.

Others were happy to see Toronto on the Bachelor’s radar.

“Finally the six is a date city on #TheBachelor after over two decades!” another Twitter user said. “Love seeing my city on (TV).”

Destination Toronto CEO Scott Beck was equally as thrilled to see the city in the hit show, and hoped the feature would increase tourism in the city.

“This is an exciting opportunity to showcase the diverse experiences across our dynamic city to the passionate fans of Bachelor Nation, especially as we anticipate welcoming many of them to Toronto in the very near future,” Beck said in a previous release.

They wore what, to where?

Dressed to the nines, the bachelorettes made their way to Steam Whistle Brewery which landed some online love for the Bremner Boulevard spot.

“Awwwwww they’re at Steam Whistle! So jealous!” a fan said in a tweet.

While the brewery was celebrated, some questioned the outfits of the contestants.

“Imagine getting dressed up to go to steam whistle lol,” a Twitter user wrote.

Canadian’s don’t take shots of maple syrup.

Bachelorettes looking to take the edge off their trip and ongoing drama were met with a shot glass full of maple syrup.

And fans were quick to call out that (most) Canadians don’t do this.

“Tonight on the Bachelor while visiting Toronto they took Maple Syrup shots and I feel the need as a Canadian to publicly declare that is not a thing,” read a very informative tweet for non-Canadian viewers.

Some felt the need to clarify: Niagara Falls is not in Toronto.

While the majority of the trip to Canada took place in Toronto, Echard and two rival castmates also made their way to Niagara Falls for a two-on-one showdown, leaving many non-Canadian viewers misinformed about the geography of the two cities.

An acrostic poem posted to the show’s Instagramindicated that the “N” in “Toronto” stands for Niagara Falls, despite being an hour and 30 minutes to drive (on a good day) from the CN Tower.

Also, some awkward Toronto-centric dating advice to the couple.

What’s the most awkward Toronto date? How about a drive up the QEW — with two contestants vying for Echard’s love?

One fan wanted to see couples in Toronto’s recent blizzard.

“They should’ve gone to Toronto in the middle of winter and whoever survives gets the final rose,” a fan tweeted. The episode was filmed in October 2021.

With the recent cold weather in the city and a nearly record-breaking snowstorm last month, they may be onto something.

Russell who?

While the show called Toronto comedian Russell Petters a “comedy legend,” some fans were appalled to find out that some contestants had no idea who he was.

“I’m insulted that the women did not gasp at Russell Peters. LIKE NOT ONE OF YOU KNOW HIM?!” Carol Eugene Park tweeted.

And the burning question: did Echard and the contestants put a lock on their love in the Distillery District?

That’s the real mystery.
