Gender equity is a business and profitability issue for companies: María Concepción del Alto

The gender equality it is a business issue. The participation of women contributes to the profitability of companies and a better return in the price of shares in the stock market, said María Concepción del Alto, director of the Master’s in Finance at EGADE Business School, Monterrey campus.

“Having a woman in a management position is a business issue for diversity” because when “the vision of a woman is complemented with that of a man, any project becomes better,” he added.

In addition, he referred that studies show that companies have higher profitability and a better return on the price of shares when there are women leading senior management positions.

The doctor from EGADE Business School recognized that there is still a significant lag of women in the general management of companies listed in Stock Exchange In Mexico, however, progress has been made, since it is a woman who runs one of the two stock exchanges that operate in the country.

“There are women who can assume a position of responsibility, but it is the Board of Directors’ commitment to look for female talent, to see the added value that a woman in a management position brings (…) I think that an important cultural change still needs to be made” , added María Concepción del Alto.

Then he said that to break down the barriers “there is talk of incorporating a quota to have women on the Board of Directors, which is how European countries began, such as Norway, Finland, but here there is still pressure to open that path, force companies to set a quota.
