Freezing rain falling on Princeton, warning issued | The Canadian News

Freezing rain has started to hit Princeton, BC, prompting Environment Canada to issue a warning.

The national weather agency said the freezing rain is expected to continue into Tuesday afternoon, but temperatures are expected to rise above freezing as the day progresses. Rains are expected to follow.

The freezing rain was singled out as a problem for motorists, but it’s also something the city has been preparing for over the past few days.

In a statement on the City of Princeton Facebook page, Mayor Spencer Coyne said rain both in the city and on the mountain passes could create a rise in water levels in the river.

“We are monitoring this very closely,” Coyne said.

“We are concerned about the levels of the snow cover, and any warming trend occurs at this time of year, with a rain event on top that could cause the river to rise.”

He said the city’s public works staff planned to be out for the weekend working on snow removal and asked residents to try to monitor their storm drains and sumps in front of their properties.

“If you see them clogged or covered in snow, please help us just by going out and shoveling the snow,” he said.

Princeton residents have been dealing with flooding since November 2021, when Tullameen overflowed during a storm and the water rose to unprecedented levels.
