Financial reform will take place in the following session: Ricardo Monreal

The reform in financial matters that is pending would take place in the next period of ordinary sessions of the Congress of the Union, to be held between February and April, reported Ricardo Monreal Ávila.

The initiatives in the matter that are of his authorship, explained the President of the Political Coordination Board (JCP) of the Chamber of Senators and coordinator of the parliamentary group of the National Regeneration Movement party (Morena), are in the process of ruling in the commissions corresponding ordinary.

“This reform (on bank commissions) is necessary and I have not removed it from the table of discussion. It is likely that quickly, next week, we can take it up again, especially financial inclusion, which, in order not to generate shocks in the markets or in the stability of the economy, I have wanted to agree and agree on it with the National Commission Banking, with the Mexican Association of Banks, with the entities that have to do with the regulation of this type of commissions.

“But we are going to remove it. We simply gave a compass, because the President (of the Republic) had indicated, in his protest, that there would be no reforms in fiscal matters in the first three years. But the first three years have passed and I think it is important to touch on these issues in the next session, which begins on February 1. So, yes, we are going to do it, and this initiative of reforms in financial matters is not forgotten, nor is it hidden, nor is it shelved, ” said the senator during a press conference from Baja California Sur.

Monreal Ávila presented since November 8, 2018 its initiative to reform the Law for Transparency and Regulation of Financial Services and the Law of Credit Institutions, on banking commissions.

In his book entitled “Reform of the Mexican financial system”, published in 2019, Monreal Ávila established:

“A new financial reform must begin by making financial services and products accessible to a greater number of people, which will not happen if current access costs are maintained, especially those concerning credit and bank fees.

Likewise, the legislator points out that Mexico must have at least two basic financial products: a payroll account that does not require minimum balances, nor does it charge commissions, with electronic banking and SPEI; and that two monthly withdrawals are allowed at any ATM at no cost and a credit card with accessible conditions.
