Family-based child care…outside the home

As part of a pilot project, Quebec will allow family child care centers to set up outside private residences to encourage the creation of new places, learned The newspaper.

According to our information, those responsible for educational childcare services in a family setting (RSG) will now be authorized to practice their profession outside their homes.

Passing through Témiscouata today, the Minister of Families, Mathieu Lacombe, will give the green light to this offer of places, which will take the form of numerous pilot projects throughout Quebec.

The RSGs will thus be able to accommodate toddlers in a community room or a room provided by the City.

A new formula that may appeal to small municipalities that do not have enough toddlers to justify the construction of a CPE or a daycare.

Home childcare providers may even work on the premises of a company or a health establishment concerned with providing a childcare environment for the children of its employees.

The coordinating offices will be responsible for authorizing and supervising the projects.

Solitude

Home childcare has often been criticized for its lack of flexibility and rigidity.

In fact, many family child care centers have closed since 2015, leaving thousands of parents without a place for their offspring.

During public consultations on Bill 1, aimed at completing the network of childcare services, workers expressed their isolation and the loneliness that sometimes comes with the profession of home childcare provider.

Team working

From now on, they will be able to group together to work in teams of two. Moreover, up to four workers will be authorized to join forces to offer daycare with extended hours, at the rate of two RSGs per period of call.

Those who choose these new paths will still retain their self-employed status, according to our information.

The Legault government has promised to create 38,000 new places in facilities by 2025.

But the family environment remains a very widespread option. More than 65,700 young Quebecers currently attend a home childcare service.
