Explosion in Barcelona’s Eixample: “It was a giant blowtorch, a huge flare”

Shortly after three in the morning, a huge explosion literally knocked Joaquin and his family out of bed. In the bar that is located below his flat there had been a great deflagration, which had broken all the windowpanes of his home. Joaquín, his wife, his two sons and his mother-in-law got dressed in a hurry and went upstairs, going up the five floors of the building, an exit path to the roof. There, along with the fifteen neighbors who live in the building, they saw how the pillar of fire rose through the courtyard of lights. “It was a giant blowtorch, a huge flare,” Joaquín explained this morning.

The heat was so intense that they could barely stand it. All the neighbors were very scared, in moments of great tension, and one of Joaquín’s sons even tried to jump to the roof of another farm with the risk to his physical integrity that this could entail. Various crews from the fire department, commented Joaquín, They quickly arrived at the Eixample estate, and three of them went up to the roof when they were able to calm the virulence of the flames that rose through the skylight.

The evacuation proceeded immediately. when verifying that they had barely suffered slight inhalation of smoke, and those who had better footwear were the first to leave the roof with the firefighters. Luckily, the huge explosion that occurred in the bar on the ground floor of his farm had not caused fatalities, something that the dimension of the event led to fear.
