Empty, 51% of the vacancies for specialist doctors in the country

The federal government announced that, to date, more than 50% of the places offered at the national level for medical specialists have been vacated.

Presenting the results of the first National Conference on Recruitment and Hiring of Medical Specialists, Zoé Robledo, director of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS), explained that, at the close of the records, 10,920 doctors —some of whom applied for two or three vacancies—, seek to be placed in one of the 14,323 specialist medical positions that were opened throughout the country; therefore, to date there is a total of 23,574 applications.

However, he highlighted that of the 14,323 vacancies that were offered, 6,963 had at least one application, while in 7,360 (51%) no specialist applied, “no doctor said: ‘I am interested in that vacancy in one of the institutions’”, said Robledo Aburto in a morning conference.

Zoé Robledo explained that of these deserted vacancies, 3,287 are in municipalities with a population of less than 200,000 inhabitants; 1,223 in municipalities with a percentage of poverty higher than the national average; 764 in municipalities with medium to very high social backwardness and 585 in indigenous municipalities.

Most of the places without applicants are in “Chiapas, Veracruz, Guerrero, Nayarit, Durango, Chihuahua, Sonora and Oaxaca. Not even hiring all the applicants could reach 46%, “he said.

In this context, it was also recalled that those doctors who decide to work in the most marginalized areas will have incentives of a bonus ranging from 10 to 50 percent.

It was highlighted that the six specialties that accounted for 63% of applications were: Internal Medicine; Surgical Medical Emergencies; Gynecology and Obstetrics; Pediatrics; Anesthesiology and General Surgery.

“Soon we will announce what other strategies we are going to do, because in the end, beyond labor are the rights of people to be treated by specialist doctors,” he emphasized.
