Elder College, which offers short, low-cost and fun courses for people aged 55 and older, is back this spring with a new slate of course offerings.

Now in its 12th year, Elder College is offering about 50 courses this spring, all without tests or assignments — you just have to want to learn something new.

“We’re so excited,” said Catherine Fettes, the program manager for Elder College. “We’ve been hard at work finding instructors who have passions and areas of expertise they want to share with people and we’ve been really fortunate to have a lot of great people come out.”

Registration opens Thursday at 9 am, by phone or online, for this spring’s slate of courses. Registration fees remain consistent with fees since the college launched in 2011, including a “buffet option” of 10 courses for $155. Courses are for individuals 55 and older.

Elder College is hosted by the University of Windsor’s Canterbury College and courses are taught by knowledgable volunteer instructors, as well as through partnerships with local organizations including VON, Point Pelee and the Essex Region Conservation Authority. Elder College is open to people across Windsor, Essex and Chatham-Kent.

This spring’s course offerings include a crash course on weather taught by CTV’s weather specialists Gary Archibald, as well as courses on climate change, local and international history — including one focusing on airplane disasters in Canadian history and one about Detroit architecture — and nature courses like a first on Point Pelee songbirds and an introduction to the natural wonders of Ojibway Park.

“We really have something for everyone,” Fettes said.

There are also a variety of computer courses, including one on digital safety, and courses on wellness and health, art, travel and car restoration.

This spring the college will be offering a mix of online, in-person and, for the first time, hybrid classes. Find more information online at eldercollege.ca or by calling Canterbury ElderCollege at 519-253-3000, extensions 4944 or 4901. Registration opens Thursday and is ongoing to June.
