Drunk driver crashes into building while fleeing OPP in Perth

NORTH PERTH –

A 29-year-old man faces a series of charges after driving drunk, fleeing police and hitting an outbuilding at a residence in North Perth.

Ontario Provincial Police said that shortly after 1:30 p.m. on January 2, they attempted to stop a vehicle on Ellen Street in Atwood.

The vehicle attempted to flee the police, crossed the lawn of a nearby residence and collided with an outbuilding on another property.

The vehicle was severely damaged in the pursuit and fled south on Perth Road 164, then west on Perth Line 72.

The driver continued into Huron County, where he failed to stop at the stop signs and drove dangerously toward Clinton.

The driver abandoned the vehicle, fled on foot and broke into a shed at a residence on the Ausable Line near Hensall.

The homeowner confronted the man by evading the police and contacted authorities.

The Perth County OPP made the arrest with the help of the Huron County OPP.

No injuries were reported from the pursuit.

The driver of the vehicle underwent further testing and faces the following charges:

  • Operation while incapacitated (Alcohol and Drugs)
  • Dangerous operation
  • Peace Officer Flight
  • Breaking into and entering a home with the intention of committing an actionable crime
  • Possession of a Class I Substance (Methamphetamine)
  • Taking a motor vehicle without consent
  • Failure to stop after an accident
  • Possession of identity document (x2)
  • Driving under suspension

The defendant was detained for a bail hearing.
