Surface Duo for three years of software and security updates

While living in Canada may mean a delay in access to new luxury smart devices like Microsoft's Surface Duo, it gives us the opportunity to research a new device before it goes on sale. Since Microsoft announced the Surface Duo on August 11, several details about the device have emerged. Some, like the lack of NFC, may be a cause for concern, while others, like software support, look pretty good. Microsoft confirmed to Android Authority that Surface Duo will receive three years of operating system and security updates. That may seem like a big compromise considering the Duo will be Microsoft's first Android phone. However, it is worth noting that Microsoft also manages updates for Windows devices; Android updates on a smartph...

Here’s why Microsoft’s next Surface Duo lacks NFC

Microsoft's new Surface Duo is now available to pre-order in the United States and will launch on September 10. While the dual-screen smartphone looks great, it lacks 5G, wireless charging, and even NFC support. Without NFC, users will not be able to use touch and pay or even add money to cards that support the technology, including Presto, for example, a transit card platform in the greater Toronto area. In addition, NFC is sometimes used for accessibility accessories and to connect to portable devices. Microsoft released the following statement on why Duo doesn't support NFC: “Surface Duo does not currently offer NFC. The role of any first generation design is to focus on fundamental scenarios that solve customer challenges. ...

Microsoft launches Surface Duo in the US, no Canadian details yet

Microsoft has officially launched its dual-screen Android smartphone, the Surface Duo. The Redmond, Washington-based company first showcased the Duo at a Surface event in 2019 alongside its dual-screen Windows Surface Neo tablet. At the time, Microsoft indicated that we would see the launch of both devices in the fall of 2020. However, it seems that the Duo arrived a bit earlier, as the rumors suggested, while the Neo was delayed. Microsoft says the Surface Duo will ship on September 10 in the US and will start at $ 1,399 USD (roughly $ 1,860.95 CAD). “Initially, the Surface Duo will be available in the United States. We will share more information on the market expansion at a later date, "said a Microsoft spokesperson. MobileSyr...

Surface Duo shows leak showing camera flash and preloaded apps

Microsoft's next Android-based foldable phone, the Surface Duo, could start shipping soon. Now, Evan Blass (@evleaks) has shared several renderings of the folding. Considering that Microsoft already showed the phone at its Surface event in 2019 (and several times since), there isn't much in the renders that we haven't seen before. Still, there are some new things and other interesting facts gleaned from the images. For starters, Blass said the renders are from the Surface Duo for AT&T. Although there is no carrier branding, it could mean the Duo will be exclusive with the US carrier at launch, or AT&T could be the source of the renders. A significant difference with this render compared to what we have seen previously is that the renderings show a flare in the upper right corner....

Microsoft Surface Duo hits Bluetooth SIG page

From August until the end of October, the tech world is filled with new product announcements. We expect to see big reveals from companies like Samsung, Apple, Google and more, but this year, Microsoft is also entering the mobile fray with its dual-screen Surface Duo. A listing for the Surface Duo hit the FCC earlier this week, but now the device is showing up on the Bluetooth SIG certification page. According to The Verge, typically, when a device appears on both the FCC and Bluetooth SIG, it’s usually just a few weeks away from launch. Previous rumours suggested that the Surface Duo might launch in July, though now it looks like Microsoft plans to release the handset in the coming weeks. The Verge says its sources state the Duo w...

Microsoft device passes through FCC, likely the Surface Duo

Microsoft surprised everyone last year when it announced the Surface Duo, a foldable, dual-screen Android phone. However, the company said it wouldn’t arrive until late 2020. Now, it looks like we’re getting closer to that holiday release. Droid Life spotted a Microsoft device passing through the FCC. Although most of the revealing details remain hidden behind temporary FCC confidentiality, the device is almost certainly the Surface Duo. The name on the FCC documents is ‘Microsoft Phablet Device,’ and the documents list that it runs Android 10. Additionally, one paragraph describes the device having two screens and ‘four configurations,’ including open and closed. Unless Microsoft has another dual-screen Android phone in the works,...
