OMA urges Ontario government to rethink reopening of indoor bars

The provincial government should rethink its plan to reopen indoor bars, the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) warns.As part of Stage 3 of Ontario’s reopening plan, bars in a large part of the province were allowed to welcome back patrons Friday to their indoor areas, provided all drinking and eating was done sitting down.COVID-19 can spread quickly in indoor bars where alcohol consumption can lead to a lack of social distancing, the OMA says.“The evidence from other jurisdictions is that the reopening of bars carries significant risk,” OMA President Dr. Samantha Hill said in a statement Friday. “When people consume alcohol, inhibitions are lowered, making them much less likely to practise physical distancing, proper masking behaviours and good hand hygiene.
