Belkin’s New 3-in-1 Wireless Charger Adds AirPods Charging to Your Arsenal

I have tested various 2-in-1 and 3-in-1 wireless chargers in the last few months. While I was impressed with Nomad 3-in-1 Base Station charger, it can be a bit picky when it comes to properly placing whatever smartphone or wireless earbuds you are charging on the pad. This is where Belkin's new 'Boost Charge 3 in 1 Wireless Charger Special Edition for Apple DevicesAlthough this year's charger is undoubtedly very similar to its predecessor, which only included iPhone and Apple Watch charging, Belkin has added AirPods charging to the device, allowing all three devices to charge simultaneously. The charger itself feels solidly built, although it still includes the same glossy plastic base which is sadly very susceptible to scratches. Hardware-wise, the charger includes a 7.5w charging pa...

Apple Granted Patent for Touch Gesture Detection, Headphone Rotation for Upcoming Over-Ear Headphones

Apple has been granted a new patent today for their upcoming over-ear headphones with support for touch gestures and headphone rotation detection. A new report from Patently Apple explains that the patent goes into detail on the touch-based input surface of the new headphones. The surface will detect taps and swipes to perform various actions such as changing volume or playing and pausing music. “The systems and methods described herein may be used, for example, to detect a gesture (e.g., a swipe) received as user input on a touch interface of the headphones, such as a touch interface integrated into an ear piece,” explains the patent. “The gesture may be made in a particular direction, such as down toward Earth.” Those gestures could do all kinds of things including swiping u...

Apple’s 3rd-gen AirPods rumoured to feature same chip tech as AirPods Pro

Apple’s third-generation AirPods will reportedly feature a system-in-package (SiP) similar to circuitry featured in the higher-end AirPods Pro. This rumour comes from often reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and was first reported by MacRumors. A system on package refers to the method of combining more than one circuit together, according to Semiconductor Engineering. Apple’s second-generation AirPods were first released back in April 2019, so it’s possible a refresh could be released somewhat soon. In theory, this shift in circuitry should allow Apple to pack more tech into the latest version of the standard AirPods. It’s possible this could be an indication that the company plans to bring a form of noise-cancellation to the AirP...

‘AirPods 3’ to Use Same ‘System-In-Package’ Tech as AirPods Pro: Kuo

An analyst says that Apple’s new iteration of AirPods may feature the same compact design of the AirPods Pro. That’s according to a new report from MacRumors, which explains that famed Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF Securities predicts Apple’s third-generation AirPods will adopt compact system-in-package (SiP) similar to the company’s AirPods Pro wireless earbuds. “Apple is expected to launch new entry-level ‌AirPods‌ with a form factor design similar to ‌AirPods Pro‌ in the first half of 2021, and Kuo’s latest note advances his earlier prediction by underlining the need for SiP technology to integrate the earbuds’ audio features into the smaller casing,” explains the report. “Introduced in 2019, ‌AirPods Pro‌ feature a different in-ear design to ‌AirPods‌, with shorter stem...

Apple sends out survey to iPhone users about USB charging brick

Rumours have been swirling for the last few weeks that along with ditching EarPods, there’s a possibility Apple could also stop including a power brick with its upcoming iPhone 12. Understandably, this stirred up significant controversy, with several tech YouTubers, journalists and bloggers decrying this is a great move for the environment. While undoubtedly true, it’s also rather easy for someone who covers the tech industry to take this stance. For instance, I probably have roughly 20 iPhone power bricks floating around my home, so Apple’s 2020 iPhone series not including a power brick in the box wouldn’t be a big deal for me. On the other hand, the average consumer isn’t buying a new iPhone every time Apple releases one. In fact, a lot of people hang onto their smartphones for se...
