PAN senators file a complaint against the Mayan Train for environmental damage

Cancun, QR. Collectively, 18 senators of the Republic who are members of the Parliamentary Group of the National Action Party (BREAD) filed a complaint with the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (teacher) for damage to the environment and natural resources of the jungle located in the Playa del Carmen-Tulum section, derived from the construction works of the new section of Section 5 of the Mayan Train.

This appeal is added to the two provisional suspensions and at least four appeals filed by environmental associations such as Greenpeace and Moce Yax Cuxtal, as well as citizens of Playa del Carmen who allege violations of their right to a healthy environment with the construction of Section 5. .

About the complaint before teacherthe senator for Quintana RooMayuli Martínez Simón, assured that they are supporting it with evidence of logging, clearing and deforestation of the jungle, as well as with photographic material on the composition of the karst-type terrain, the caves and caverns that are found below the route of the Train Maya and that are part of the aquifer system of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Given the mass of evidence presented in the complaint, the legislator specified that they requested the federal authority to inspect the new layout of the Section 5 located between Carmen beach Y Tulum.

“It is evident the environmental damage that is being caused by the work of the Mayan Train, from Profepa we expect an inspection based on the evidence that we present and that it proceeds in accordance with the law. We agree with this work, but it must be carried out respecting our environmental regulations to guarantee the preservation of our natural resources,” Mayuli Martínez Simón asserted.

The complaint also refers to the observation of the Superior Audit Office of the Federation (ASF), in the sense of the non-existence of the Executive Project and the Environmental Impact Statement.

“In addition to the evidence of environmental damage that we present, we complement the complaint with the report of the Superior Audit of the Federation, which indicates the non-existence of the executive project, environmental permits, as well as inconsistencies in the use of public resources,” said the legislator for Quintana Roo.

The PAN senator regretted that authorities of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur), in charge of the work, continue with the development of the work without having the Master Plan in which strategic lines are established that define the competitiveness, environmental impact and social, as well as market strategies and instruments to guarantee the planning, execution and monitoring of the Mayan Train.
