Greg Abbott signs an agreement with Samuel García to suspend inspections of motor carriers at the Colombia Bridge

Monterey, NL. Governor of Nuevo Leon Samuel Garcia Sepulvedasigned a Memorandum of Understanding with his Texas counterpart, Gregory W. Abbott, with this, the inspections of the cargo transport that crosses the Colombia bridge are suspended. Governor Abbott hopes to reach similar agreements with the governments of Chihuahua, Coahuila and Tamaulipas.

By normalizing the access of merchandise through the Colombia Bridge, this will allow to relieve the motor transport traffic that has been stranded in Nuevo Laredo since last April 6, according to the newspaper El Mañana de Nuevo Laredo.

The order given by the governor of Texas, to carry out an intense inspection of commercial vehicles by the Texas Department of Public Safety on April 6, was with the objective of preventing the entry of migrants into the United States.

However, the delay in border crossings caused protests and blockades by Mexican carriers at some points along the border.

“The Bridge (Colombia) of Nuevo León will return to normal from now on,” announced the president of Texas. We have reached an agreement with Governor García to prevent the entry of undocumented migrants from Nuevo León”, he emphasized.

He said that it is a crisis that is being experienced on the border, “tell Biden to keep Title 42, which has been in force for years.”

In context, the Joe Biden administration announced on April 1 that in May Title 42 will end, which allows the immediate expulsion of migrants who seek to enter the border from Mexico and Canada to the United States; measures that were taken in 2020 to avoid contagion by Covid-19.

The Texas governor added that the president of the American Union has fueled the flow of illegal migration. “It is time for the (Biden) administration to stop (…) with Mexico we seek solutions, I thank Governor García for working together with us.”

For his part, the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García Sepúlveda, stressed that it is of great importance for his administration to have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the governor of Texas, because this will allow greater security on the border.

“Nuevo León is ready to connect with Texas and take advantage of the T-MEC,” said García Sepúlveda.

He reiterated that the state has the objective that the Colombia Bridge be the best and most efficient international crossing on the border with the United States and that the region of Texas with Nuevo León become the most important in world trade.
